School systems everywhere have been cutting back on free time for children in order to focus on preparing them for mandatory statewide tests. One of the casualties of this trend has been outdoor recess. Now, the federal government is also responding to the growing obesity epidemic with new requirements for comprehensive wellness programs. These new programs will focus on improved nutrition in school meals, physical education and reduction of soda sales and other fattening snacks. It is vital, though, that kids have an opportunity to get outside and exercise while at school. Outdoor activity needs to be part of a rounded wellness program including the return of recess. Man, I can't imagine my kids if they didn't have recess! They would be bouncing off the walls by the time they got home. Thanks for the information.

I really do worry about kids who don't get outside to play during school hours. At our elementary school, they include 6th grade. The 6th graders do not get a regular recess, but do get some free time on Friday afternoons. I know most school systems include 6th grade with middle school, but when I was in middle school, we had time outside to run and play. I don't understand why they don't allow that anymore. I suppose it is up to the parents to tell their older kids to get outside to play after school is out, but they're so exhausted from all their studies, it is difficult to get them moving at all.
