As an ultra-busy citizen of today's world, making time to get outdoors can feel like yet another item to add to your arm's-length "to-do" list. But it doesn't have to!

By making a few changes (like reducing your family's screen time), as well as reminding yourself about the benefits of outdoor time (oh, the restorative powers of fresh air and trees!), you can carve out some time to connect with nature.

Here are five more tips to help you and your family find more time for your Green Hour:

  1. Dress for success. No matter what time of year it is, nature always has something great to offer, but you just might need a raincoat to enjoy it! Don't let a little rain or snow stop you from getting your Green Hour -- fresh air has year-round benefits. For more tips, visit our Parents' Guide.
  2. Trade the treadmill for the trail. Fitness is important to the health and happiness of your family. Outdoor activities like hiking, biking, canoeing and gardening are fun, family-friendly ways to increase your family's fitness as an alternative to going to the gym!
  3. Get growing! Planting a garden is a fantastic family activity and a great way for kids to learn about life cycles, pollination, and other aspects of the natural world while developing a new hobby and enjoying time outside. Whether it's in a backyard, community garden plot, or a series of containers on a balcony, a family garden will soon become a cherished place for children and adults alike.
  4. Start a new family tradition. Camp in the backyard, do a family service project, become citizen scientists, or have a backyard birthday party. Make nature a part of your cherished family memories. Why not start a nature journal or scrapbook to capture all the fun?
  5. Explore nature at night. The planet takes on a whole new beauty when the sun goes down. Go stargazing, make a moon journal, catch fireflies, or go on a night hike. It's a great way to find more hours in the day for a Green Hour!
