One of the best things about getting outside is that there is something for everyone. No matter what time of year or where you live, you can always find something fun and interesting to do outdoors.

While encouraging your children to try new activities and have new experiences is important, you can also appeal to their natural interests. Nobody knows your child better than you, so think about what they enjoy and then try to match it to outdoor activities and skills that they can develop. You'll hear a lot less "I'm bored!" and a lot more "Can I go outside?"

Here are a few ideas matched to your child's interests. Of course, there are lots more -- just look outside for a little inspiration.

If your child likes...

  • Science: Plant a garden; take part in a water monitoring project; build a birdhouse and keep track of who makes its home there; start a rock collection.

  • Art: Make stepping stones for your yard; sketch leaves and flowers; make a bark rubbing; try nature photography; press flowers; do a watercolor study of a favorite landscape.

  • Music: Make instruments out of natural objects; learn to whistle with a blade of grass; listen to bird songs and try and imitate them; make up songs and dances about favorite animals.

  • Sports: Try hiking, fishing, camping, kayaking, rock climbing or cross-country skiing.

  • Writing: Start a nature journal; write poems and stories about the natural world; take a trip to library and look for nature books and stories to inspire them.

  • This is a wonderful short/simple way to share with parents as I am a preschool teacher bringing an awareness to the values of NaturePlay in my preschool program. Thankyou for the wonderful contributions you provide. Hugs, Tdeb/ImaginationPlay
