Next week marks the first ever "Take A Child Outside Week." This is an international program, started by Liz Baird at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, designed to arm parents, teachers and other caregivers with resources on outdoor activities.

Inspired by Richard Louv's book, Last Child in the Woods, the program's goal is to help children across the country develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment in which they live, and a burgeoning enthusiasm for its exploration. With this in mind, spending time outside with a child helps them to:

  • connect to the natural world
  • improve focus in school
  • reduce the likelihood of obesity

As a mother, I try to get my children out everyday. I am wondering if there is a "button" available to add to blogs to help spread the word?

SO glad to hear about this. As an environmental educator, I constantly preach about getting the students OUT of the classroom and into the living world of the school grounds.Ellen ( Beagle Ridge Environmental Education Center)
